Year of Farn Tie Sway

Rewinding back in year 2000 when I was “studying” for my HSC, my mum said to me one day that the Year of the Dog is going to be a bad year, known in Chinese as “Farn Tie Sway”.

Being a half-religious woman who reads the multiple magazines and books on Feng Shui, including the oh-so-famous “Blind Chan” – Seriously that’s what they call him, I had no choice but to accept this fate.

Fast forward to today. Without going through the book of Blind Chan, I am certain that I am once again in the year of “Farn Tie Sway”. In the past two weeks, I’ve had three near-injury accidents:

  • Crazy man driving a WRX on Victoria pulling into my lane without looking at his blind spot. My scooter was a ruler away from his car
  • Law obeying driver running the red as I was waiting to turn right. Luckily I didn’t step on the gas and I knew something was up. The driver saw me as he was driving 80 kmph through the intersection and swirled to his left thinking I was going to hit him.
  • As I was crossing the road at Crows Nest. I realised the car stopped particularly far from me whilst I was crossing the road. Next thing I heard was the sound of the engine and a woman was reverse parking into a spot right where I was crossing. I had to literally smack my hand on the Volvo until the woman realised I was there.

I’m not a religious man but this one is too close to call.

Safe driving and riding to everyone and especially to ones who are the Year of the Dog.

PS. My mother never got back to me when I asked her how people were going to do well when EVERYONE in Year 12 were Year of the Dog. Maybe she’s waiting for Blind Chan to get back to her on that.
